Show me a kid and I will show you somebody who likes kid-sized loft beds. I have some relatives with a house that contains three built-in children's loft beds – and kids loft it! Honestly, as an adult, I find myself too worried about awaking disoriented in the middle of the night and falling to great bodily harm from one of the things (one of them has a ten-foot drop down onto the next landing, if one does not approach and dismount it with care), but I know that when I was a child, I would have loved those things. What a delight it would have been!

I know that most kids love children's loft beds, and here is why I think that is so. When you are a kid, you tune into things that sort of say “kids' stuff” – and that stuff includes corners and nooks where you can hide and create your own kid world. This is especially true for kids older than five, as they begin to have a realization of self.

In short, children's loft beds are a place to not only sleep for kids, but also a place to have flights of fancy – especially if they are into books. A child's loft bed is like a kid's book nook.

Of course, most homes do not have cool little loft beds built into them. That is why loft bed sets are available in the consumer marketplace. If you are seeking this sort of bed for your child, here are some thoughts I can share. First, make sure the kid's loft bed you seek to buy is the right size.

This goes two ways. You do not want to put a child who is way too small to be up on a loft bed into one of these. That could be dangerous. Loft beds typically stand about five feet off the floor. That is five feet that a toddler could fall. Nobody wants that!

Also, with regard to size – on the other end of the spectrum – be sure that the bed is not too small for the kid. If you have a child who will enter adolescence before long, do not buy him or her a loft bed sized for five-year-olds. Doing so will have you out bed shopping again before you know it.

Another comment, while cheap children's loft beds may have some appeal to your bank account, you always get what you pay for, as they say. If you spend a little more for quality, you may find you wind up with a kids' loft bed that last as long as you need it – and may likely do well as a hand-me-down.

All that said, I hope you find the children's loft bed that is right for you and yours.
